Ask a copper market question research can answer.
Define the copper material, counterparty role and geography for a Market Map. Separate published capabilities from lot acceptance and commercial terms.

- 01Material evidence
- 02Required role
- 03Acceptance gaps
- 04Scoped research
A useful copper market brief explains the material, the company role required and the decision the research should support. Start with one question: who merits a enquiry against the receiving site's material specification, where a required process appears to exist, or which company roles deserve closer investigation.
This gives the research a clear purpose. “Find copper buyers” leaves the form, geography and acceptance problem unresolved.
Choose the decision before the output
Write the decision in one sentence:
We need to identify [company role or capability] in [geography] for [copper form and available evidence], so we can decide [next commercial action].
The next action could be requesting input specifications, narrowing a processor search or deciding whether further research is justified. A report cannot substitute for a receiving company’s assessment of the actual lot.
Supply the information that changes the search
| Brief field | Include | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Declared grade, form, origin and condition | Defines what the company must be able to assess |
| Evidence | Dated analysis or other material documents; gaps identified | Shows what the receiving question can rely on |
| Quantity and pattern | Lot size, unit and one-off or recurring requirement | Makes the enquiry more specific |
| Counterparty role | Buyer, collector, processor, refiner, trader or other required function | Prevents different company roles being treated as equivalents |
| Geography | Material location and market to investigate | Defines the research boundary |
| Timing | Decision date and any material movement constraint | Identifies the order of follow-up work |
| Output | Required company comparison, sources and next questions | Sets a usable research deliverable |
| Specialist questions | Classification or movement issues and their review owner | Keeps research separate from required specialist decisions |
Unknown composition, an unclear company role or an undefined geography should remain visible. Resolve what you can before widening the search.
Ask for evidence that supports an enquiry
For each candidate, the research should show the relevant operating site, stated capability, original source and date. Add the specific question left for the company: physical input limits, analysis requirements, available receiving capacity or current willingness to assess the lot.
Keep “published capability” and “confirmed acceptance” in separate fields. A company appearing in a register is a reason to investigate it when the evidence matches the brief. It is not an offer to buy the material.
Set the exclusions clearly
A Market Map is an information task. Agree the research scope, source access and deliverable before commissioning it. Quotes, material purchase, lot acceptance and shipment approval require their own direct work.
This boundary is commercially useful because it helps the buyer see what the report can support. It also identifies which next action needs a processor, trader, transport provider or specialist rather than more desk research.
Review the map against the original question
A useful handoff should let you answer:
- Why was each company included?
- Which site and capability relate to the material?
- What source supports that relationship?
- Which important question remains unanswered?
- Who should resolve it before a transaction is considered?
If the answer is only a list of names, ask for the missing connection to the material and decision. If evidence of a required capability is weak, investigate that gap before assuming a broader search will solve it.
ScrapBasin can help scope a Market Map around a defined material, geography and company-role question. Bring the material description and the decision you need to make.
